Promoting Tolerance through Music in the North-East

REBHI successfully produced peace and tolerance themed audio-mix tape (CD) featuring popular traditional (Zakirai-Nasheed) musicians and selected contemporary artists from Borno. Further to this, a massive media campaign was aimed to ensure that Maiduguri and by far the Borno airwaves were saturated with steady air-plays of the tracks produced, and related discussions on peace, tolerance, forgiveness, reintegration, recovery and development were held with the artistes and selected personalities and opinion leaders, academia and across all sectors of the social fabric of Borno State was conducted in two popular Radio Stations of Peace FM and Kanem FM Respectively. The intervention has led to increase in emergence of positive narratives and awareness about the resilience of people recovering from insurgency in the Northeast Nigeria. REBHI also worked with local popular and influential home-based music celebrities to amplify their potential to have a much more worked key role in helping to address critical developmental issues and alarming vulnerabilities in the society rather than merely entertaining the masses. This effort ultimately contributed towards building cultural bridges between the people, tribes and communities in the Northeast in order to promote peace and tolerance and battle violent extremism, as the region begins recovery efforts.
